Indiana advocates seek hemp crop expansion, education

The seeds of the plant could be used for a high-nutrition food, loaded with fiber, protein and essential fatty acids. Fibers from it can be made into rope, clothing and paper. Parts of the plant could be turned into biofuel, or even building materials. “If items can be made from trees, cotton or plastic, it can be made with industrial hemp, only more environmentally friendly,” said Ashley Sample, a Whiteland resident and community coordinator for the Indiana Hemp Industries Association.
    
Hemp could be a weed worth cultivating

Just ask Gregg Baumbaugh, CEO of an Elkhart manufacturer that spends hundreds of thousands of dollars each year on shipping expenses to import hemp and other natural fibers grown in Canada, Europe and Southeast Asia. “You may get a headache or get sick, but you won’t get high. You may as well smoke a cornstalk,” said Jamie Campbell Petty, president of the Indiana Hemp Industries Association.

A research project at Purdue University is preparing for when the restrictions change. The goal is to be ready when Indiana farmers will be allowed to take advantage of another agribusiness opportunity. "We sort of foresee a future where they are going to change the law shortly," says Ron Turco, agronomy professor at Purdue University. "I hope within a year or less at the federal level, they take it out of the drug classification and put it into a boring agricultural classification."
