MHC Member Healthy Hoosier Oil Adding Hemp to the Lineup

Midwest Hemp Council Member, Mark Boyer, tells us “I will be adding hemp seed oil to our lineup of cold pressed, farm grown oils in hopes of establishing a value based market for this form of hemp. This crop with its many different forms and markets, has the long term potential of being a solid performer as a rotational crop in production agriculture."

Mark Boyer was the first Hoosier farmer to grow hemp since WW2. In 2018, Mark grew approximately 15 acres of Legacy Hemp's X59, a quality grain cultivar grown for human consumption in the form of seed or oil.

The Boyers tell "My Indiana Home", they were desirous of diversifying their farm. Mark's father, Craig, proposed oil crops. During an on-farm visit, then Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann suggested the idea of food-grade oil production. The Boyers grow nearly 300 acres of sunflowers canola - and now hemp - in rotation with their corn, soybeans and wheat. Healthy Hoosier food-grade oils are extracted and bottled right on the farm. The Boyers sell the remaining hulls to a neighboring farmer, who feeds them as a protein source to his pasture-raised hogs.
